2010-2011 STATEMENTS OF INTENT
President - Fred Thwainy
As the current Vice-President of BAASS, I am well versed in the operations and organization of the committee. Communication and interaction with all the architecture students at the University of Toronto is a priority of mine. If elected President of BAASS, I will see to it that all suggestions made by my fellow students will be addressed and discussed during the BAASS meetings. Relations and collaborations with other student committees is another interest of mine. Interactions with other committees will not only increase the exposure of BAASS, but it will also allow students to expand their creativity into other departments. My main priority is to provide solutions to the issues that students will face during the academic year with regards to BAASS, and I will do everything in my power to resolve these concerns.
What can I say; I began to take interest in BAASS since I first stepped into the Larry W. Richards class. I remember the first day the then-president David Zhai gave a brief introduction about Open House and what BAASS was about. I, like most students in my class, was very passionate about architecture and wanted to do my best to get familiar with that environment. I began by becoming acquainting with the executive, started attending the meetings every week, and became involved in competitions and social gatherings.
Second year came, I knew most of the execs by then, I was helping them out organizing events, help new students become integrated because I knew how it felt to be the “new kid”, sometimes confused and lost in the conundrum of system. I was very approachable and first years were comfortable to come and talk to me about any questions they had. It gave me immense pleasure to see I was making a difference and maybe at times influence their decisions.
Currently in third year, I believe I have the experience, enthusiasm and passion to lead this wonderful group of students. Co-ordinate the team to plan events and work closely with students as well as professors in order to provide an enjoyable as well as educative environment outside lecture halls. There have been times where I have been criticized for working harder than some of the current executive members. I just ignore the remarks, to me it doesn’t matter; although I am not an executive member I consider myself as part of the team and it gives me great pleasure to know that our events are a success and students have had a great time.
Will be posted shortly. Statement.
Hello! I am currently a second year student pursuing a double major in architecture and economics. Having attended previous BAASS events and being a general member of the course union for two years, I would like to take on a position of more responsibility next year. In hopes to bridge the gap between my two majors, I am applying for the role of Financial Commissioner. My course itinerary demonstrates my enthusiasm towards architecture, math? and a lukewarm passion for statistics. I abuse Microsoft Excel and its organizational software relentlessly, documenting the economic decisions of my own expenditures. As a responsible student who has experience being a part of executive committees throughout high school and university, I would not hesitate to supervise the administration of BAASS funds were I to receive the role of Financial Commissioner.
As your public relations officer I seek to breach the gap of communication between you the student body and our board of executives. Communication is key for the successful performance of baass but I'm also eager to persuade you to come out to our events because baass can be your social instigator in this architecture program that, well you know, at times compromises our social life with sleepless nights. In times like those, baass can nourish your architectural souls! As your PR officer, I will make it a priority to reach out to organizations related to the field and invite them into our community. Thus, whether it be an open house, an exhibition, a guest lecture, firm visits, or a sketchup workshop, what baass caters to all you aspiring architects is great exposure, and I will do my job to voice out these opportunities for you. Last but not least, I want to hear back from you. I want to hear what your concerns are and ensure that they get transmitted back to our board, after all baass is yours. So just lemme know and I'll take care of the rest ;)
I have been a part of Shift Magazine for two years, during which I have written articles, attended meetings and events, and contributed to developing themes and promotion. I think Shift has a very promising future and I have a few concrete ideas that could be beneficial for the magazine. First of all, this year we started experimenting with different themes, writing styles, and design. I would like to continue this creativity and have more ambitious layouts to really showcase the writers’ talents. Secondly, I want to collaborate with other publications (on and off campus) to increase exposure and create new experiences. Thirdly, I hope to make Shift better known – to architecture students, but also to non-architecture students, faculty members, and the surrounding community. I want to put in the work needed to receive funding so that we can produce more copies and distribute them to places beyond the faculty. Finally, I am aware that most of the Shift members will be graduating this year. I have already begun to approach people for future writing positions. I know the importance of persistence needed to run a publication, and I am very committed to keeping Shift magazine alive and thriving.
I am a 3rd year student majoring in Architectural Design and Visual Studies. For the past few Years I have been an active member of BAASS, and have been involved in most of the society's events as well as competitions held by the department. I have experience and knowledge in coordinating school events such as frosh and orientation, and I will be able to bring this understanding to my role as the social director of BAASS. I plan on advocating for more design-oriented opportunities on and off campus and if elected I hope to start new, creative and exciting initiatives that would enhance the student life of undergraduates at ALD. As a passionate and spirited design student, I believe that I am an excellent representative of our student body.
